Summer

How to prevent "Summer Slide"

(Courtesy of Good Housekeeping magazine, July 2018.)

Enjoy these ideas to help keep kids' minds sharp!

START A COLLECTION

Bottle caps, stamps, and other travel mementos are like hidden treasures!

The process of collecting fosters curiosity and patience and keeping track of items can help children learn responsibility

* Go an extra step and encourage them to show off their stash and let them choose how to display it.

MAKE READING A RULE

Find ways to slip reading into a daily routine, like using the "wait a half hour after eating" rule to get your child to ick up the newest page-turning series before heading back outside.

BEFRIEND YOUR LOCAL LIBRARIANS

Ask a librarian what their current favorites are and about library summer programs (Vista Library: click here.)

Then check out some books, find a fun spot to read (inside or outside), and enjoy!

FOLLOW A RECIPE

Turn your kitchen into a classroom with a cooking lesson: Have your child measure out every ingredient and repeat the directions to help boost basic math and reading skills as well as observe the process and predict changes.

READ ALOUD

Cereal boxes, billboards, maps, anything with words...encourage youngsters to say what they see. Research shows this increases vocabulary and promotes fluency and comprehension.

Need some ideas about how to keep kids active during the summer, whether physically or mentally? Want to know what's going on around the community? Like to stay connected? Want to keep learning? Enjoy this growing list of resources and opportunities for kids and families to keep you all active during summer (I know....we're going to miss seeing you all everyday, too!)
