Dr. Devin Vodicka, Superintendent in Vista Unified School District, “sees the world changing all around us and is committed to changing our system of education to one that embraces the uniqueness of every child and helps celebrate the rich diversity of our nation.”
Dr. Vodicka was recognized as 2016 California Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators, 2015 Superintendent of the Year by Pepperdine University, 2015 California Superintendent of the Year award by the Association of California School Administrators and he received the Innovative Superintendent Award from the Classroom of the Future Foundation in 2014.
Nationally recognized as a courageous innovator and thoughtful leader, Dr. Vodicka’s education career began in the classroom over 20 years ago, when he taught English learners in Los Angeles, and he has held numerous leadership roles, including principal, director of curriculum and instruction and chief business official in the Carlsbad Unified School District.
Experiences ranging from the classroom to the board room provided Dr. Vodicka with a broad lens of analysis, which make him an insightful and empathic leader.
An Aspen Institute Pahara Fellow, Dr. Vodicka was one of only 30 superintendents from across the United States who participated in the Superintendents’ Technical Working Group in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology. Under his leadership, Vista Unified has been accepted as a member in the prestigious League of Innovative Schools.
Honored and humbled to participate in these cutting-edge think tank groups, Dr. Vodicka is thrilled to have the opportunity to continue learning and share what he has learned in order to benefit students and student learning.
Working closely with the dedicated education professionals and staff in the Vista USD, Dr. Vodicka strives to liberate those working closest with the students to maximize their individual and collective talents to meet students’ needs. This possibility-thinking approach to instruction has given the district numerous programs and academies, including the Casita Center for Technology, Science and Math, a kindergarten – grade 5 International Baccalaureate World School, where learning laboratories for science, technology and engineering and math are built around wetlands and ecosystems that let students explore and apply lessons in natural environments.
Dr. Vodicka’s education includes a doctorate in Organizational Leadership and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership—both from Pepperdine University—and an undergraduate degree in History from UC Santa Cruz. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Pepperdine in their doctoral program where he has taught courses on quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
An active participant in statewide technology projects such as the TICAL Leadership Cadre and the Association of California School Administrators “Technology Leadership Group,” he has published numerous articles focusing on leadership, trust, and technology.
Dr. Vodicka is married to his high-school sweetheart and they have a daughter and son who attend school in Vista USD.
