California Avenue School

The mission of California Avenue School is to provide a nurturing place where all students are educated in an inclusive and respectful environment, to provide opportunities for all students to become responsibly independent to their greatest extent, and to support each other and the community in the pursuit of lifelong learning.

The school opened in 1975 in downtown Vista. About 300 preschool and elementary-school students attend fully integrated classes, which include children with special needs. “The school prides itself on providing a rigorous, high-quality program,” Principal Rachel Schmidt said. The school offers a range of services including adaptive physical education, speech-language therapy, nursing services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, hard of hearing services and vision services. Other programs and services offered to meet students’ individualized needs include a sensory room, autism program, intensive language and behavior clinic, therapy pool, canine companions, and technology lab. The outside playground equipment is specially designed to provide access to students using wheelchairs and other adapted equipment.  Parent resources include monthly parent trainings and a family resource library.
